Staircase sanded and stained dark

Staircase sanding and staining · 2025

The treads had yellowed under old lacquer and were worn through in the middle. Sanded back and stained dark, the stairs read as a piece of furniture instead of something you walk past.

A staircase is among the hardest things to sand. There is little flat surface to work on, a lot of edge, and every tread has a nosing that has to be followed exactly for the transition to come out even. Most of this was done by hand.

The treads got dark stain and a hard-wearing lacquer, while the risers were kept lighter. The contrast makes the stairs easier to read in poor light, which is worth more than people think.
