Floor installation
Most of the work happens in the subfloor, long before the first board goes down.
When the old floor is past saving, we lay a new one: parquet, solid wood or block parquet, matched to the room and the subfloor.
We take out the old floor, prepare the subfloor and lay the new one. The parquet is left to acclimatise in the room before we start, so it does not shrink or swell after it is down.

How we work.

Subfloor and moisture
We measure moisture in concrete or timber joists, and check that the surface is flat enough. A floor laid on an uneven base will creak no matter how well it is laid.

Levelling
Where it is needed, the surface is filled or levelled before we go further.

Acclimatising
The parquet sits in the room for a few days before laying, so it has taken up the moisture in the air and will not move afterwards.

Laying
Glued, nailed or floating, depending on what the floor and the base require. Herringbone and block patterns are set out from a centre line, so the pattern sits square to the walls you actually look at.

Skirting and transitions
Skirting, thresholds and transitions are finished with the floor, so you do not have to bring in someone else for the last part.

Questions we get often
Do you lay herringbone?
Yes. Herringbone and block patterns are among the things we do most, both as new floors and as repairs to existing pattern floors. See the projects for examples.
Does the old floor have to come out first?
Not always. If the old floor is sound, flat and dry, it can often be used as a base. That saves both demolition and waste, but it has to be judged on site.
How long does it take?
A normal flat takes three to five days from demolition to finished skirting. Herringbone takes longer than straight boards, because every piece is set individually.
