Floors we have had our hands on.
A floor is easier to judge than to describe. Here are the jobs, with photos from before and after.
Before and after Pine floor sanded back to light timber
Floor sanding · 2026
The living room floor was dark with old stain and decades of wear. Two days of sanding took it back to fresh pine, without a single board being replaced.

Before and after Painted chequerboard floor taken back to timber
Floor sanding · 2026
Someone had once painted the floor in a grey and white chequerboard. Underneath was a perfectly ordinary, perfectly good oak floor that had not seen daylight in decades.
-
Before and after Staircase sanded and stained dark
Staircase sanding and staining · 2025
The treads had yellowed under old lacquer and were worn through in the middle. Sanded back and stained dark, the stairs read as a piece of furniture instead of something you walk past.

Before and after Pine floor saved during a full renovation
Floor sanding · 2025
With the walls stripped back to brick, the floor was one most people would have skipped: black with old adhesive and paint. There was still enough timber underneath.
-
Before and after Weathered pine floor back in use
Floor sanding and lacquering · 2026
The floor had greyed the way untreated pine does, and was patchy after years of sun and use. The grey sits only in the top layer, and underneath the timber is as light as the day it was laid.
-
Before and after Wide pine boards, from matt to gloss
Lacquering and oiling · 2026
The sanding was already done here. These photos show what the lacquer itself does to a floor, which is the part people rarely see before it is finished.
-
Herringbone parquet in oak
Floor installation · 2026
Herringbone asks more of whoever lays it than any other pattern. Get the angle wrong on the first piece and the error walks its way through the entire room.
-
Before and after Herringbone floor from bare concrete to finished
Floor installation · 2026
A whole flat, taken room by room across nine days. The photos follow the job from the adhesive being combed onto the concrete to the last coat of lacquer drying.
-
Oak parquet sanded in a rental flat
Floor sanding and lacquering · 2026
A flat between two tenancies has a short window. Here the floor was finished and ready to move into in three days.
-
Solid oak worktops
Solid wood worktops · 2025
The same craft as a floor, but with less margin: a worktop is measured in millimetres, and the cut-outs for the sink and hob have to land first time.
