Painted chequerboard floor taken back to timber

Someone had once painted the floor in a grey and white chequerboard. Underneath was a perfectly ordinary, perfectly good oak floor that had not seen daylight in decades.

A painted floor is the job that takes longest to get going. Paint melts from the heat of the sanding belt and clogs it, so you go through far more belts than on a lacquered floor, and you have to work more slowly.
The photo from the middle of the job shows why you cannot guess the number of passes in advance: the paint lets go unevenly, and the last of it sits down in the grain where the belt cannot reach.
Underneath was oak that was worth the trouble. The floor got a matt lacquer, and the room went from being about the pattern on the floor to being about the light.
